PV Storage for solar power

For reasons of both environmental protection and cost savings, owning your own PV system continues to enjoy great popularity, even though the feed-in tariff for solar power has fallen drastically. But this is precisely why the purchase of a photovoltaic storage system is worthwhile. Power storage units for photovoltaic systems enable efficient storage of the solar power produced. Solar power systems with PV storage enable inexpensive self-consumption at any time of the day or night and increase independence from the public grid. In addition to our own PV mounting system, we carry PV storage components from leading manufacturers such as FOX-ESS, SOFAR, RCT or BYD.

What is the purpose of a PV electricity storage unit?

This component of the photovoltaic system is used to store the solar electricity. Without the photovoltaic electricity storage system, the solar electricity produced would have to be consumed directly or fed into the public grid. Direct use is often not possible, or only partially possible, because photovoltaics produce most of their electricity during the day. However, experience shows that electricity demand increases towards evening. However, the feed-in tariff for solar electricity is much lower than the purchase price. Therefore, it is economically unfavourable to feed electricity into the grid during the day and draw it from the grid in the evening. An appropriate PV storage system significantly increases the economic efficiency of the photovoltaic system.

The system types of PV storage

There are the following classifications for the units:

  • AC storage system

AC stands for Alternating Current. This is the electricity that is available in the public grid in Germany at a frequency of 50 Hz. Most electrical appliances also require alternating current. The photovoltaic system, however, produces direct current. An inverter turns this direct current into alternating current. The AC storage system is connected separately to the local grid, where the inverter of the solar system is also located. It has a built-in inverter that converts the alternating current back to direct current, which is then stored. Due to the double conversion of the current, there are higher losses than with a DC system. The advantage is that these systems can easily be retrofitted to the photovoltaic system.

  • DC storage system

The DC stands for Direct Currrent = direct current. These systems are installed before the inverter. They have the advantage of lower conversion losses, as the current is only converted once when it is delivered from the storage unit.
