High-voltage grid

In order to transport large amounts of electricity, the grid operators of the public electricity grid rely on high voltages of up to 150,000 volts (150 kV). This has the advantage that the electricity can be transmitted with as little loss as possible and allows the transport of large amounts of energy. High voltage is contrasted by extra-high voltage (220-400 kV), medium voltage (10-30 kV) and low voltage, which is in the range of less than 1 kV. In Europe, a voltage of 230 volts is used here, via which most households are connected (also called mains voltage).
